FTS,
Once again, very interesting.
why do jws insist on still quoting from the old testament to back up some of their wacky ideas?
such as on blood, beards, abortion, tattoos, etc.
surely if the mosaic law code was nailed to the torture stake all of its parts were cancelled.
FTS,
Once again, very interesting.
during my time in the cult i sometimes sat during a talk thinking why on earth are they talking about topics like this with kids in the audience.
talking about sex and masturbation was probably the worst one i heard and my daughter was only 5 at the time.. what inappropriate talks or comments have you heard over the years that children should not be exposed to really?.
I give my late father full marks here.
His newly-converted JW mother managed to lure him along to a few public talks (mainly at Circuit Assemblies) and other JW meetings. However, he was quick to note that much of the content was not suitable for the many children in the audience. Consequently, he resisted the pressure from his JW mother to have us kids reared as Witnesses.
For that I cannot thank him enough!

Once more, where is David_Jay when you need him!
Those versed in the history of the Jewish people would be quick to tell you that the Jewish writers of the Old Testament never intended it to be taken literally. Rather, it was written purely as a collection of folklore, with a view towards helping preserve the unique identity of the people after they were exiled to Babylon.
You can only marvel at the craziness of those who allow themselves to get bent all out of shape over the things said in a collection of Middle East fairy tales!
i must say there is no other religion in modern times that has lied more to their cult followers than the watchtower company and no more brain dead, gullible cult members than the jdubs.. just three examples.
when russel was in charge 1914 was prophesied to be the end of the system of things with armageddon and the earthly paradise.
that didn't happen and poof now 1914 was not the end, oh no, it was the beginning of the end.. the second example, the generation that saw 1914 would not pass away before the end came, which meant in all jdubs minds that paradise had to be here in the late 1990's.
It would seem that even in the time of Judge Joseph Boozerford, Crazy Fred was the closest thing they ever had to a theologian.

i just would like to thank amy for all the work she's put into this over the last year - as well as all the people that participated in this.
as a member of the new zealand community, i'm very thankful and appreciative.. #astormiscoming.
Thanks for posting.
Sorry to have to report that I knew personally several of the perpetrators. Thankful, though, that neither got his filthy fingers on my daughters!
i was told shooting guns and collecting them was not something a jw should do.
when i lived way up north us it was more of a deer hunting group and so some guns were ok, when i moved to florida it was different.
most people in the hall were not hunters.
i'm sure most here who've questioned or left behind their belief in god have encountered this question - without god, what basis can there be for morality?
my exwife, when i admitted that i was an atheist, once asked me "if you don't believe in god, what's to stop you from going out and raping and murdering?
" previously, whenever i got this objection, i would tend to turn it around on the other person with a response along the lines of "if fear of god is the only thing that stops you from murdering, that makes me rather nervous to be around you.
Stephen Covey, in his Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, summed it up well. To determine whether or not a principle is correct, just visualise what the world would be like if everybody didn't practice it.
Having a religious leader lay down the law about what is right and what is wrong only works to the extent that religious people apply those principles. And there's the rub! All too many religious people (with Christians noteworthy among them) fail to practice what they preach.
This did not go unnoticed amongst the "heathen" peoples of Africa, Asia and elsewhere. For example, in 19th Century New Zealand, the newly-converted Maori people were quick to observe how the Ten Commandments were relegated to second place from Monday morning until midnight Saturday - then sent on an indefinite Leave of Absence whenever there was a war on!
there is more “ yellow journalism “ than ever before!
newscasters and writers that you thought were trustworthy often miss the mark.. do you generally accept the “news” as being honest?.
"Unreliable" is how I would describe our mainstream media.
has anyone been able to verify that fred franz received the minimal training in ancient greek that he claimed gave him the expertise to translate the bible?
you would think that would be fairly easy to verify or disprove in this day and age.
what college did he attend?
whatever the case was about the fact remained he had no scholarly training in hebrew.
I didn't think anyone here was disputing that fact?
my mother was not the most emotionally stable person.
she was a follower and instilled in me the idea we were better than those worldly people.
its hard to go to school as a child and you can not be friends outside of school, you can not celebrate any holidays, and you are told all these people are going to die.
No!
Rather, I cannot thank my father enough for resisting the pressure from his mother to raise us kids as JWs.
My newly-converted grandmother managed to get my father to attend the odd Circuit Assembly public talk, but he remained unimpressed. He particularly noted that much of what he heard was totally unsuitable for children.
Wherever you are now, Dad, I thank you profusely for that!
